The story of “The Budgie Smuggler”

    or
The YR@W ad the Liberals tricked YouTube into pulling down

There's only a few days before we vote on 21 August.

At the start of the election campaign Tony Abbott might have said WorkChoices is dead but there is still no industrial relations policy from the Liberals.  It's simply not good enough for the Coalition to go to the polls without being open with voters about their plans for working Australians.

The ACTU has twice written to Mr Abbott to clarify the Liberal Party's industrial relations policy – but there has been no reply.

So we started wondering, especially when more and more reports were coming in that Liberal candidates weren't attending community forums, what is Tony Abbott hiding in his budgie smugglers?  After all, that shot of him on a beach in budgie smugglers, or speedos, is one of the most prominent images of Mr Abbott.

Our thoughts lead to us to produce “The Budgie Smuggler”.

When we released it last Wednesday (11 August) night, first to our subscribers and community, we were uncertain about the response it would receive.

We certainly didn't think it was controversial. But it quickly drew a mixed response from those that hate it to those that love it to those that think it's 'banal'.

However, at about 2pm on Thursday, we noticed YouTube had pulled down our “The Budgie Smuggler” clip.  Checking our account's details, we discovered we had apparently violated their terms of use and community guidelines.

We immediately suspected another agenda at play here. The Liberals are desperate to avoid talking about their industrial relations policy and their plans for Australian workers before the election. We lodged an appeal believing that YouTube was tricked into believing it was offensive by Liberal Party operatives and supporters.

Then on Friday morning YouTube had reinstated the video – a big thank you to YouTube.

We never thought that our 26 second ad, being relatively harmless, would cause such a stir.

    Apparently we're wrong.

We think the video is a humorous animation having a satirical poke at Mr Abbott, which conveys a serious message about his hidden industrial relations agenda.

    What do you think?
